| Description: |
The goal of this project was to enliven a main public space
that had been subdued by previous renovations and to visually connect the
main floor to the upper elevator lobbies, within a very limited budget.
Our approach was to remove and redesign the ceilings to help give life
to the space that previously showed little. The design concept for the main
lobby is further strengthened by following this parti through to the
elevator lobbies on the upper floors. A shallow dome signifies entry to
the building, announcing arrival. A vaulted plane penetrates the domed space,
pulling one towards the elevator lobby. A band of black granite becomes a canted wainscot,
helping to balance the marble walls against the granite floors.
Arches delineate structure while washing the vaulted ceiling plane with a warm light.
