Located in the heart of downtown Cleveland, this existing three-story furniture store/warehouse had four separate additions dating from the 1920s to the most recent in the 1970s. Richard L. Bowen + Associates and Drake Construction Company joined as a design/build team to unify the additions into a cohesive whole with a complete interior renovation. New electrical and mechanical systems, along with the addition of an elevator were needed to bring the building up to code. The project also included asbestos abatement.
The objective of the project was to address the requirements of a modern regional government office building, while maintaining the original charm and character. An entirely new brick facade was added, including new floating curtain wall systems and new window openings were created to admit daylight into newly created interior spaces. As part of the interior up-fit, new offices were created to meet the needs of individual departments as well as new dynamic lobby and boardroom spaces. The boardroom is utilized by mayors and government officials for monthly regional meetings encompassing a five-county area.
