The Stark Area Regional Transit Authority’s (SARTA) Gateway facility serves as the central operating nerve of the transit system within Canton City limits. Due to increased ridership and an increased fleet, the Gateway facility, originally built in 1981, required renovation to facilitate expansion. The renovation project provided expanded office space, upgrades to the bus storage facility, new bus equipment and an expansion of the bus garage facility.
This project was especially challenging because SARTA remained in full operation during renovation. A comprehensive work-around plan was established for each phase of the project. The project was funded through grants received from Federal Transit Administrative (FTA), Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), and Ohio Public Transit Association (OPTA).
