Transforming an existing building into a viable workspace
The Crawford Area Transportation Authority (CATA) purchased a lot containing a pre-engineered metal building adjacent to their existing maintenance facility.
CATA engaged Bowen to investigate the programming of their existing vehicle maintenance facility and identify ways to integrate the purchased facility into the maintenance campus. Bowen led a needs analysis and programming study, culminating in a set of schematic design drawings and estimate.
The new design proposes reconfiguration of select existing interior spaces to address current and future growth needs. Maintenance functions will be relocated to the recently purchased building, freeing up space in the main building for expansion of the vehicle storage areas, dispatch area and allow for a larger break area and driver quiet room. A 1,400 square foot, steel framed connector building will be constructed between the two structures to provide additional programming space, continuity and better circulation. The connection will also function as a conduit for transporting facility services between structures. New program spaces include:
- A shared-use conference room and print area
- A new vestibule for the maintenance building
- Additional administrative offices
After approving the concept, CATA continued to engage Bowen in the full design of this renovation.
