Together, We’ll Make it Happen
The Saint Luke’s Foundation has invited the community they serve to be an active participant in the planning of their new headquarters. Bowen and Valarie McCall Consulting Agency (VMCA) are excited to share our design and community engagement process with St. Luke’s Foundation and the Buckeye-Shaker, Mt. Pleasant, and Woodhill communities to make this vision a reality.
Design Approach

The new building must reflect the spirit of the people, the neighborhood, and the St. Luke’s Foundation mission. This building will be a collaboration between The Foundation and the people it serves. We look forward to working with you!
1. SOCIAL GATHERING SPACE
YOU SAID: The most commonly expressed desire is for an outdoor community gathering space accessible to all.
TRANSLATION: Center the building around an outdoor courtyard. The courtyard acts as an outdoor play and meeting hub that the entire building has access to. The shown building also fronts all flanking streets, making an indoor space fronting future block parties and street fairs.

2. WELCOMING SPACES
YOU SAID: The building should be welcoming and accesible to all people in the community.
TRANSLATION: Positioning main entrances at every corner of the site welcomes community members from all directions. Pulling the building away from the street allows for “front yards” and “front porches” to reflect key aspects of the community dynamic.

3. SAFE AND TRANSPARENT
YOU SAID: A constant in all reports is the strong desire for safety, lighting, and visibility.
TRANSLATION: Strategic placement of transparent materials allows the central courtyard to be physically protected, yet visually accessible in all directions.

4. A GOOD NEIGHBOR
YOU SAID: The building should be organized in the most efficient and effective manner to maximize community comfort and usage.
TRANSLATION: The program is arranged to buffer noise, increase visibility, and provide effective work spaces and resources for St. Luke’s and the community.

5. HEALTH & WELLNESS
YOU SAID: There is a strong desire for access to green space.
TRANSLATION: Reflecting the commitment of St. Luke’s Foundation toward community health and wellness, natural, sustainable materials are used in combination with abundant glass and landscaping to produce a building that is healthy and feels healthy.
