Combining natural materials for practical and inviting spaces
As part of Bowen’s Task Order contract we were asked to design new combined bollards and benches for the main entry way of the Huntington Convention Center. Each bench is of a uniquely shaped design incorporating illuminated letters spelling “Cleveland” facing east and west, inviting pedestrians to move through the space. The letters are internally lit to glow at night.
Made of thermally modified ash wood. This species is more environmentally friendly than a traditional exotic hardwood. It is also more suited for outdoor use due to the process of thermally modifying the wood for better dimensional stability and rot/mold resistance. The benches also conceal a crash rated bollard to provide safety to those on the sidewalk.
